Benjamin Morgan Palmer (1818-1902) ‘one of the few greatest preachers of the first nineteen centuries of the Christian era’, was just 25 when he became the successor of J. H. Thornwell in Columbia, South Carolina, and 38 at the commencement of his 46-year pastorate of the First Presbyterian Church in the great business centre of New Orleans.
This biography takes us behind the public figure to the humble, prayerful Christian whose life was marked by affliction. His only son was lost in childhood and four daughters were to die, one after another, followed by his wife. As Palmer saw it, ‘The earthly lights are put out that no earthly love may come in between Him and us.’
This is not only a great biography; it is an outstandingly relevant record in an age when the church needs a recovery of spiritual strength and vision. It would be hard to read it sympathetically without being led to pray.

“These sermons first appeared in some old periodicals back in the 1940’s, ’50’s and the ’60’s. A lady cut them out and gave them to Dr. Telford back in the early ’70’s. He immediately gave them to me, and I stored them away, forgetting all about them. Some 30 years later, I ran across the box that contained these messages while I was looking for some other material. Realizing that young pastors would benefit from these sermons, I decided to put some in print…I pray that the Lord will use these sermons to bless countless souls as they are used to bring glory to His name.”

LECTURES TO MY STUDENTS consists of many outstanding addresses by the great C. H. Spurgeon, delivered to the students of “The Pastors’ College,” which he founded in 1856. “The preacher’s inner life as well as his public ministry” was the subject of these addresses. Elocution and gesticulation were the theme of several, while the volume on THE ART OF ILLUSTRATIONS (abundantly illustrated) is perhaps the most comprehensive work still available today.
