‘This book is well worth reading, … the merits of the study are that it is biblical–usually there are plenty of references to support an assertion, and the book proceeds by exegesis of verses and passages; it is practical, the aim being so to expound the doctrine as to promote the experience; it is well set out with headings and sub-headings, so that the substance is not lost in vagueness, and the reader is not lost in complexity…’ — J.A. MOTYER

Andrew Murray’s writings were a cherished and vital part of his ministry in Africa. In this classic work, Murray stresses the importance of one truth: the Holy Spirit must be known by every believer as an indwelling life of spiritual power. For Murray, this indwelling is to be accepted and treasured until it becomes part of the consciousness of the believer. As the Holy Spirit possesses us, all of our lives, even the least things, must be surrendered to His leading. If God’s people can learn to wait on the Holy Spirit for divine leading and working, placing ourselves entirely at His disposal, there will be manifestations of the Spirit’s power in the church such as the world has never known. In The Spirit of Christ, Murray covers all aspects of the Holy Spirit, in the hope that God’s glory will begin to work through His church in powerful ways that would be a witness for all the world.

“There is no middle ground; our faith must be passionately focused on Christ, or we become earthbound, caught up with concerns, pleasures, and friends who will inevitably fail us.”

Thomas a Kempis was not a haphazard follower of Jesus.  The depth of his masterpiece mirrors the life of a man who did whatever was necessary to imitate his own Savior.

A Kempis lived as intentionally as he wrote.  We must turn away from the things of this world, we must live sacrificially, we must be inundated with Christ’s passionate teaching, and we must pray to be removed from distraction.

A classic in every state of the word, The Imitation of Christ places the fruit of one man’s single-minded devotion to God’s calling on his life within the reach of every reader.  May we all commit to be this effective in our emulation of Jesus.

    NOT KJV

Owen on the Holy Spirit, as this work has been known to generations of Christians, was written by the greatest theologian of the Puritan era. It is, without question, one of the truly great Christian books. Originally published in 1674 as Pneumatologia, or A Discourse Concerning the Holy Spirit, it is a massive work, taking up 650 pages in the Banner of Truth edition of Owen’s Works (volume 3).

It deals with the name, nature, personality, and operations of the Spirit, and urges the necessity of gospel holiness as distinct from mere human morality. The work is both doctrinal and pastoral in character. The very length and exhaustiveness of the original book could easily deter us from attempting to read it, but this abridged and modernized version, like the other Owen volumes in the Puritan Paperback series, will make Owen’s teaching more accessible to modern readers.
