H A Ironside commentaries are classics and an excellent resource for personal study and spiritual growth.

Charles Hodge’s work on 1 and 2 Corinthians, which is part of the Geneva Series of Commentaries, forms one of the most significant parts of the plan for a series of ‘popular commentaries’ on the New Testament. He projected to do this with J. A. Alexander in the 1850s. When the early death of Alexander prevented the completion of the series, the individual volumes were quickly prized in their own right and went through many editions on both sides of the Atlantic.

The qualities which have given Charles Hodge’s commentaries such a wide and enduring market are readily to be seen. In the first place they are singularly clear. The technicalities of critical opinion, which soon cause a volume to become dated, are not to be found in his pages. His aim was to produce commentaries which learned and unlearned alike could consult with profit. Believing that he was dealing with the words of the Holy Spirit he endeavored to set out both what those words contain and the effects which their truth should have upon the conscience and life.

Alexander Nisbet’s commentary on 1 & 2 Peter provides an outstanding practical treatment of his epistles. This Geneva Series of Commentaries is ideal aid for preachers, teachers, group leaders and all students or readers of the Bible. Perhaps of all the apostles, most Christians find themselves most readily drawn to Simon Peter. His failure, restoration and subsequent usefulness provide hope for those who face testing and temptation. Despite that, Peter’s twin epistles are probably given less attention than many other sections of the New Testament. But they continue to speak with power and relevance.

They provide encouragement and assurance from one who himself needed both; they give basic instruction in Christian living; they also provide clear teaching on false doctrine. They are therefore essential letters for Christians today.

The Pastoral Epistles, first published in 1874, is the last commentary written by Patrick Fairbairn, but his first on any of the books of the New Testament.
